Smarter Safer Solutions recently conducted a HLTAID011 – Provide First Aid course. Students were taught to apply skills and knowledge required to provide a first aid response to a casualty in line with first aid guidelines determined by the Australian Resuscitation Council (ARC) and other Australian national peak clinical bodies.
The course applies to all persons who may be required to render a first aid response in a range of situations, including community and workplace settings.
Specific skills taught to students included:
Handling a casualty with suspected spinal injury. Students needed to take care with minimal movement of the casualty to place their patient onto a spine board, secure the patient; then carefully move them to safety.
Application of Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR). Students had to demonstrate that they could perform CPR in accordance with ARC guidelines. CPR mannequins were used in conjunction with a trainer AED (Automated External Defibrillator).
